How To Choose An SPF

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, which makes it the best time to re-visit your sun protection checklist and make adjustments where necessary including making sure to use sunscreen!

Choosing the best sunscreen that works for your particular skin type and lifestyle can take some trial and error. With so many sunscreens available these days it’s important to purchase one that completes this checklist:

  • Offers Broad-spectrum Protection (UVA and UVB)

  • Has an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher.

  • Contains Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide in the Ingredients. These two ingredients are two physical blockers of UV rays.

  • Water and sweat resistant

What’s the best kind of sunscreen?

Sunscreens are available in lotions, sprays, stick, gel, etc. It is all about your personal preference. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use every single day. Of course, a sunscreen is only effective if you use it correctly and consistently.

Follow These Benchmarks for Proper Sunblock Application:

  1. Wear sunblock every day, regardless of the weather and season.

  2. Apply to all sun-exposed skin, not just your face. Don't forget your neck and hands!

  3. Re-apply sunblock every 2 hours if you are going to have prolonged sun exposure.

Other Ways to Stay Sun Safe

Keep in mind that while crucial, sunscreen alone is not enough.

  • Cover up. When you are out in the sun, wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of UV light.

  • Seek shade. Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.

  • Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds can cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.

  • Wear an antioxidant. High potency Vitamin C serums will not only help protect against environmental toxins but also the sun’s rays.
